About the work
Mr Eks’ Camden Players was developed for the London Borough of Camden to help promote over 100 events taking place in the area throughout July 2011. The website was commissioned by Coney who were the masterminds behind the events and the entire project.
The websites actual function was as a listings site but in fact it became the world's first fortune telling listings site. It's visitors were led through a series of choices by Mr Eks, the master of serendipity, who encouraged them to "rely on their subconscious" to select from a range of different playing cards. He then revealed a list of events that were happening in Camden, based on the choices they made and therefore deemed suitable for that individuals personality. Events were classified as suitable for visionaries, poets, dandies, bohemians, adventurers and rebels.
This approach meant that people discovered events and activities to attend that they did not know they were looking for and added to the overall idea of revealing a hidden Camden full of surprises.
My role on the project was mainly as art director and designer, I designed the initial UX also.
I based the design and illustration of the site on a paper theatre and made everything as a real paper model then photographed the results. Every element that appears on stage was handmade and cut-out individually, this approach whilst time consuming gave the work the magical feel Coney wanted.
The character illustrations on the personality cards were drawn from characters you might find in Camden.
