About the work
This was a presentation delivered at In The City music conference, held annually in Manchester.
As part of the Future of Music Packaging panel I spoke on the subject of the impersonal nature of digital music and the emotional connection we have to tangible objects such as vinyl covers and cassette tapes.
The brief to panelists was to design and present a piece of future music packaging for a made-up band called Wild At Heart and their album Gratification.
Here is the future packaging format I designed, it is named the iObject as a sly dig (I object) at the pervasive homogenised culture of digital music as offered by Apple and iTunes.
The iObject was part mp3 player, part sculpture, part connected smart object. It was proposed as an "album" bought by fans in order to play one collection of music like a traditional LP. However it was also proposed to connect you to the bands or artists online activity and keep you in touch by projecting live data streams onto your walls or ceiling.
